Event Details
On Saturday, Jan. 21, Baton Rouge Gallery will host a unique and multifaceted celebration of the exhibition with the Surreal Salon Soiree from 7-11 p.m. An irreverent evening of art, live musical performances, surrealist games, costumed attendees and more, the Surreal Salon Soiree will be unlike anything you’ve ever experienced!
Tickets are just $15 in advance (+ $1.82 service fee charged by Eventbrite). If you come in costume, tickets at the door are still just $15 (but they're $20 if you're not in costume).
The Soiree's headlining musical act, Mobley, will bring the exciting auditory and visual spectacle that has made them a favorite in the region to Baton Rouge Gallery. Founded in North Carolina by lead singer & songwriter Anthony Watkins II and later joined by bassist Tim Shelburne and drummer Sergio Trejos, Mobley’s repertoire, by virtue of its diversity, truly transports the listener. It's a set composed of contrasting moods and moments: an anthemic blitz of guitars and wired synths; a falsetto croon slinking out over drum-bass groove straight out of '73; a music box lullaby bursting into chamber pop or keening alt-country or glitzy dance-rock. All of these sounds are complemented by a stunning video/light component.
Opening the night up will be Prom Date, an indie pop/rock quintet out of Baton Rouge that blends a mix of guitars, electronic sounds, synth/keyboards and harmonies together into an indie rock dance gumbo. After years of collaboration and growth, Prom Date has gained attention in the Baton Rouge and New Orleans area, playing with such bands as GIVERS, Chairlift and James Husband of the group Of Montreal.
One of the most visually stunning aspects of the Soiree is the audience itself. Everyone is invited to top the imaginative costumes worn in years past which have included unicorns, mermen, big pigs, a band of superheroes, tree nymphs and almost any other dreamlike creature one can imagine. Cash and prizes will be awarded to those judged to have the "most surreal" attire.
The Soiree just wouldn't be complete without a contemporary take on the surrealist games which helped spur such artistic giants of the 20th century as Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte and are still used today.
